CONDUCTIVE EDUCATION AWARENESS DAY 2010 |
|
The first ever National Conductive Education Awareness Day was held on February 25, 2010. Conductive Education centers all over North America were encouraged to plan and organize an event or promotion to advocate for Conductive Education. Registered members/centers of ACENA used the 2010 Campaign Kit from ACENA to prepare activities for the day. ACENA sent a survey to all members/centers to solicit feedback regarding their CE Awareness Day activities. Based on the survey feedback, the National Conductive Education Awareness Day was a huge success (as of 17 April 2010, nineteen members or, approximately 38% of the membership base, responded to our survey request). 89% of the Centers received the Campaign Kit and 68% used them. Although Conductive Education centers focused on different specific areas of Conductive Education, 94% of the centers used the day to develop general awareness of Conductive Education. Several Conductive Education centers organized media coverage about CE. The following statements are taken from the surveys we received:
“In February the Center mailed over 300 packets detailing our programs to fellow therapy providers, nonprofits, physicians, schools, governmental agencies and recreation programs that serve children with physical disabilities. We obtained the list from UCP of Chicago - great local resource that is available throughout North America. As a result of our outreach, we have performed an additional 8 evaluations and have enrolled 6 new children in our program.”
“The Mayor and
Governor issued proclamations.
“Media (shaw TV) broadcast a short piece on our adult and child programs. Was edited reasonably and quite accurate. Local community newspapers put articles on front page discussing the program and the centre. Regular programs were run.”
“Our center had a short story in the ABC World News; let people learn more about CE. We also will hold a presentation for OTs about CE during this month.”
“Proclamation by City of Toronto and City of Halifax. Press release sent to all local newspapers, radio and television. Global News segment in Nova Scotia. Website testimonials. Hosted Parent Meeting to obtain buy-in and solicit their support to their local politicians in both Nova Scotia and Ontario. Hosted “Bring a Parent to CE Class” day. Obtained Provincial Proclamation of “CE in Ontario Day” (April 28th) (date was moved from CE Day due to change in provincial government and proroguing of Legislative Assembly). Hosting reception at Queen’s Park Legislature in Toronto for all Ontario Members of Provincial Parliament and formal recognition in Legislature.”
“A local newspaper wrote a brief article and included a photo provided by us. Photo and short description were included on the newspaper's website for only one day. Entire article was never available on newspaper's website, unless you were a regular subscriber to the newspaper.”
“We had both print and TV coverage. It was hugely successful. Next year - I will work on "declaring the Day" within our political umbrella”
“Press Release
to 72 print, TV, and radio media outlets throughout Michigan regarding the
Awareness Day.
A special thanks to Brent Page, Executive Director at March of Dimes, Toronto, for developing the 2010 Campaign Kit, and to the Board of Directors at The Association for Conductive Education in North America for the preparation work. ACENA would like to thank to individuals and Centers for the hard work for organizing activities for the first Conductive Education Awareness Day. |
