OVERALL COURSE OBJECTIVES:

  • Understand the current terminology and treatment for individuals with motor disorders

  • Understand the implications of educational laws (i.e. IEP, IDEA) on CE programs and services

  • Learn about the adjunctive services, i.e., recreational programs and augmentative assistive technology, available to individuals with motor disorders

  • Relate the current research findings to the practice of conductive education

  • Provide more options and new ideas to implement within the classroom setting for conductive education services

  • Understand the essential operations of establishing and maintaining a non-for-profit organization

  • Collaborate and network with the other conductive education providers, physicians, and other related health and education professionals

Highlights of Some of the Course Topics:

  • Discriminating Hypertonic Disorders in Cerebral Palsy- Dr. Deborah Gaebler, M.D.

    • Definitions proposed by the NIH taskforce on Child Motor Disorders

    • Clinical measures and research related measures for spasticity and dystonia

    • Implication for function

  • Counting Children with Cerebral Palsy: Creating Population-Based Networks for Optimizing Functioning and Participation- Dr. Michael Msall, M.D.

    • Changing epidemiology of cerebral palsy

    • Current knowledge of what is known about functioning and participation among children with one of the cerebral palsy syndromes

    • Current opportunities for establishing networks that will promote functioning and participation across the life span for individuals with   cerebral palsy   

  • Handwriting without Tears- Josephine Boggs & Gabriella Molnar

    • Use of a multi-sensory approach towards learning handwriting

    • Capitalize on use of repetition and task analysis as applied to learning letter formation

    • Classroom application of these methods and techniques that are consistent with the principles of conductive education

  • Goal Oriented Task Series Including Dressing Tasks- Andrea Benyovszky

    • Use of task analysis within a defined conductive education program

    • Novel ideas for the use of task analysis as applied to a functional activity

  • Metaplasticity of Motor Control- Dr. Jim Stinear, M.D.

    • Tour of research lab and current equipment utilized for evidence based practice

    • Application of research findings to the field and practice of conductive education
